Abstract

Abstract: The question pertains to linguistic methods and has great importance in clarifying the idea and conveying the concept. When Allah mentions something in the Qur’an, he only wants to establish a specific principle and guide humanity to use the method in the correct way. In contrast, He prohibited them from inquiring about what beyond human comprehension and exceed the limitations of their understanding, or expressing an opinion or thinking about it, this includes Allah’s condemnation of asking the Prophet ﷺ about hypothetical scenarios and that excessive questioning leads to the downfall of societies. If the Companions were prohibited from asking the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ too many questions, then why are there numerous inquiries in Surat Al-Baqarah? How do these questions relate to the surah's theme, and how these questions can be merged with the queries they were advised against asking. The issue lies in the misunderstanding that the Companions either abstained from asking questions on matters or excessively questioned the Prophet ﷺ. This perception is unjust towards them, as it implies they acted contrary to divine guidance and warrants punishment. The aim of discussing this topic is to clarify the factors, motives, and principles behind the questions highlighted by Allah in Surat Al-Baqarah, and approaching it scientifically would clarify the various types of questioners, the features of the questions, and the societal context in which they originated. The phrase “they ask you” appears in the entire Qur’an in thirteen places, six of which are in Surat Al-Baqarah, and those questions were about different topics, but all of these questions were related to their daily lives, and this is the legal justification that the Shari’h (Allah) asked to follow and it can be summarized in “asking about what is possible and liveable and not about what is not possible.”
