DAWR AL-MUTHAQQAF AL-ISLAMI FI ISLAH AL-MUJTAMA’: MUHAMMAD IQBAL UNMUDHAJAN [THE ROLE OF MUSLIM INTELLECTUALS IN THE REFORMATION OF SOCIETY: THE CASE OF MUHAMMAD IQBAL]

Abstract

Abstract: Muhammad Iqbal (May Allah have mercy on him) is considered one of the greatest reformists who called for the supremacy of Islam. They equally opposed the western civilization that distorted morals, corrupted societies, and contributed to the idea of patriotism and nationalism which produced a morally unclean and intellectually weak generation. However, some Muslim intellectuals have abandoned the role entrusted to them, which gave way to other intellectuals with destructive ideologies. This situation has become disastrous to Muslim society in general and Yemeni citizens in particular. Therefore, this paper focuses on Muslim intellectuals’ contribution to the reformation of society as well as their presence and conscious reaction to the intellectual arena. In particular, this study aims to highlight the role of Muhammad Iqbal (May Allah have mercy on him) in enlightening Muslim society and reviving the spirit of cooperation among them. The study employed an inductive descriptive method to explain how Muslim intellectuals contribute to social reform and how their absence affects Muslim society. The findings of this study revealed that the Muslim philosopher, Muhammad Iqbal, represents a living example of excellence in the reformation of society, and his philosophy continues to be echoed and accepted. Muhammad Iqbal’s understanding of reality and conscious interaction are exceptional in the eradication of ignorance and backwardness which, in turn, contributes to the advancement of society. Nevertheless, the withdrawal of Muslim intellectuals from the ideological war is considered a major problem with long-term effects on society.

ملخص: يُعتبر محمد إقبال رحمه الله من أعظم المُصلِحين المُجددين، الدّاعين إلى سيادة الإسلام، والثائرين على الحضارة الغربية التي شوّهت القِيم، وأفسدت المجتمعات، وساهمت في إذكاء روح الوطنية والقومية، فأنتجت لنا جيلا مُلوّثا أخلاقيا، ومُعوقاً فكريا. وتظهر مشكلة البحث أن المجتمعات الإسلامية تشكو من غياب المثقفين الإسلاميين، وتخلّي البعض منهم عن أدواره المنوطة به مما أفسح المجال أمام التِّيارات الفكريّة الأخرى، والتي تنطلق ُ من أيديولوجيات هدّامة، فكانت النتيجة كارثية دفعت ضريبتها المجتمعات الإسلامية عموما، والمجتمع اليمني على وجه الخصوص. وتهدف الورقة إلى بيان أهمية دور المثقف الإسلامي في إصلاح مجتمعة، وإلى تأكيد حضوره وتفاعله الحيّ في الساحة الفكريّة، كما تهدف إلى إبراز دور محمد إقبال رحمه الله في تنوير المجتمع المسلم، وإحياء روح التعاون فيه. وقد استخدمت الورقة المنهج الاستقرائي والوصفي لرصد خطورة تخلّي المثقف الإسلامي عن أدواره وضرر المجتمع المسلم منه، وقد خلص البحث إلى نتائج أهمها: أن فيلسوف الإسلام محمد إقبال يُمثّل نموذجا حيّا في آراءه الإصلاحيّة، وهمته الدعويّة، وما زالت أفكاره لها صدى وقبول رغم تباعد السنيين. ومنها: أن فهم المثقف الإسلامي لواقعه، وتفاعله مع عصره يعودان بالنفع على رُقي المجتمع، وانتشاله من براثن التّخلف والجهل. ومنها: انسحاب المثقف الإسلامي عن معركة الحياة المعقدة، وترك الساحة للتيارات الأخرى يعتبر معضلة كبرى، ومشكلة عظمى لها آثارها الخطيرة على الأمد البعيد.
